How to Find the Best Vintage Levi’s at Round Top

Insider tips from Brooke of Nan Collective

There’s something irreplaceable about a great pair of vintage Levi’s. The faded wash, the worn-in softness, the way they tell a story before you even put them on. But hunting for the right pair at a massive event like Round Top can feel overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Few things are better than finding the perfect pair of vintage denim in the fields. The racks across Highway 237 are filled with decades of worn-in blues, each pair with its own history. Knowing which ones to grab and which ones to leave behind can make all the difference.

We asked Brooke of Nan Collective, a vintage curator known for her expertly sourced denim collection, to share her best tips for scoring the perfect pair. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a first-time vintage shopper, these are tips you’ll want to keep in your back pocket.

Vintage Levi’s Sizing Runs Small, Always Size Up

One of the biggest mistakes shoppers make is grabbing their usual size off the rack. Vintage Levi’s sizing runs dramatically different from modern denim.

Brooke recommends going up three to four sizes from what you’d normally wear. That might sound like a lot, but older sizing standards, fabric shrinkage over decades, and different cut proportions all play a role. Don’t let the number on the tag scare you — trust the fit, not the label.

Bring Your Measurements

Before you head to the fields, measure the spots that matter — your waist at the smallest point and your hips at the widest. Keep those numbers on your phone. If you can, toss a soft tape measure in your bag so you can check flat measurements on pairs you can’t try on. Having your numbers ready saves time and keeps you from second-guessing in the middle of a crowded tent.

The Squat Test Every Denim Shopper Needs

Found a pair that looks promising? Try them on and squat down. It’s Brooke’s go-to move for checking whether vintage denim is truly the right fit.

The ideal pair should feel snug — hugging your body without restricting movement. If you can squat comfortably and the denim moves with you rather than against you, you’ve likely found a winner. Vintage denim often starts stiff but softens beautifully with wear, so a slightly structured feel is completely normal. If they pinch or feel rigid in the legs, keep looking.

Classic Levi’s Cuts Worth Hunting at Round Top

Not all vintage Levi’s are created equal, and knowing which styles to look for gives you a serious edge. Brooke’s personal favorites are timeless silhouettes that have stood the test of time for good reason — they flatter a wide range of body types and only develop more character with age.

The 501XX

The holy grail of vintage denim. Highly sought after by collectors, the 501XX features a classic straight fit and a button fly. If you spot a pair in your size, don’t hesitate.

The 501

The timeless button-fly style that works on nearly everyone. The 501 is the most recognizable Levi’s cut for a reason — the back panel is cut wider than the front, which gives a flattering lift and hug through the seat. This is vintage denim at its most iconic.

The 517

A flattering slim fit with a subtle bootcut that looks incredible with cowboy boots (which, let’s be honest, is half the point at Round Top). The 517 offers a nice natural rise and a silhouette that complements just about every body type.

Fun fact: the 517 was also reportedly Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s favorite pair of Levi’s. If it’s good enough for one of the most iconic style figures of the ’90s, it belongs in your Round Top rotation.

If you’re new to vintage denim, starting with one of these tried-and-true cuts is the best entry point.

Skip the Wash and Let the Denim Live

Here’s a tip that might surprise the neat freaks out there — don’t wash your vintage Levi’s unless you absolutely have to.

Vintage denim builds character the longer it’s worn without washing. The natural fading patterns, the way the fabric softens in just the right places — that’s what gives each pair its one-of-a-kind personality.

The more you wear them, the more the denim molds to your body, creating that perfectly lived-in look vintage lovers are always searching for. When you need to freshen them up, spot cleaning or airing them out is the way to go.
